Education and Outreach

The Environmental Education & Outreach Coordinator provides education opportunities to all ages including youth, schools, libraries, municipalities, and adults in the general public. Throughout the school year, hands-on lessons are provided to students on different subject areas that tie into state curriculum. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, virtual lessons have been carried out successfully through zoom meetings, while still being able to engage students with a hands-on activity that relates to the subject.

The LCCD partners with municipalities, the Penn State Extension, and Lehigh County Authority to carry out Rain Barrel workshops throughout the year. Participants that register and attend an informational workshop on the importance of reducing stormwater and non-point source pollution are eligible to receive a free rain barrel. For upcoming workshops, please contact Laura Hopek at

Envirothon is a fun, academic event that challenges teams of  high school and middle school students to learn practical concepts and application of environmental topics.  Students may work, in teams of five, with a team advisor to learn material in each of five ecology subjects:  Aquatics, Forestry, Wildlife, Soil & Land Use, and Current Issues (this year, the current issue theme is Water Resources Management: Local Control and Local Solutions).

This extra-curricular activity exposes students to a range of disciplines and potential career paths. Students develop study skills, practice effective teamwork, and learn natural resource management and ecology.  The overall winning team of the county competition moves on to the state level to compete for scholarships.
